Your First Supportive Device Is Your Shoe
Wearing properly fitting and supportive shoes even in the house is a key factor in treating biomechanical problems. Most people can’t wait to remove their shoes at the end of the day. That is a big mistake. Don’t blame your shoes, blame your feet. Your shoes have been your best friend all day and you want to kick them to the curb. It is important to understand how to identify supportive shoes (good arch support, firm counter, solid shank). The firm counter will reduce heel eversion if the patient excessively pronates. The solid shank will decrease the torque allowed by the shoe controlling the foot rolling in. A good arch will increase the surface area and foot/shoe contact which will evenly redistribute the weight-bearing pressure areas.
In addition, patients should wear shoes with a round, high toe box that give toes plenty of room. Custom Orthotics made from a cast of the patient's foot can replace the store-bought insole for further control.
